BOMA/GLA leadership had a unique opportunity to sit down with Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom to discuss his campaign for Governor of California. The Lieutenant Governor was familiar with our friends at BOMA San Francisco from his time as Mayor of San Francisco and displayed a great understanding of our issues.
BOMA/GLA PAC boardmembers went to Napa, CA this week for the CBPA Strategic Issues Conference and the BOMA CAL Board Meeting. The California Business Properties Association (CBPA) is an association in Sacramento, led by Rex Hime and Matthew Hargrove, that advocates for commercial property owners on threats to our industry at the state level. BOMA CAL is made up of representatives from each local California BOMA and has its own seat at the table with CBPA.
Hundreds of commercial owners attended a hearing December 1st to voice concerns with the implementation of the City’s waste hauling program, RecycLA. BOMA testified that distance and access fees have significantly increased the cost of waste collection, while customer service has worsened. Also, many members want diversion reports which are currently not available from haulers.
On December 05, 2017, voters in Assembly District 51 will go to the polls to elect a new Assemblymember to replace Jimmy Gomez, who was elected to US Congress last June. Assembly District 51 is comprised of the Eastside communities of Echo Park, El Sereno, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, and more. After the October 3, 2017 primary election, the 2 candidates that advanced to the runoff were Wendy Carrillo and Luis Lopez.
BOMA/GLA Advocacy staff has been working with the Council on their sidewalk vending efforts since the discussion began. Commercial property owners have a large stake in the issue and want to make sure that the Council implements a system that balances the rights of sidewalk vendors and those of brick-and-mortar business and property owners. BOMA/GLA PAC board members were excited to attend a fundraiser for Assemblywoman Laura Friemdan today at Union Station. BOMA/GLA supported Assemblywoman Friedman in her last election and are excited to support her as she seeks a second term in 2018.
Assemblywoman Friedman has been a strong advocate for Glendale her entire career and is doing great things on the Transportation Committee. We look forward to working with her as she continues to push Los Angeles County and the state of California forward!
At this week's San Fernando Valley Q4 Regional Council Meeting, BOMA/GLA members heard from Nikki Ezhari, Councilman Ryu's District Director who covers the Sherman Oaks portion of the San Fernando Valley. Nikki was able to give BOMA/GLA members some great insights into waste hauling, homelessness, and the plans for allocating Measure M funds in the Valley.
BOMA/GLA and the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce combined forces today to put on a Beverly Hills Government Connect at Beverly Hills City Hall today. There were over 30 members in attendance and around 15 city officials. On hand to speak directly with BOMA/GLA and Chamber members were Public Works, Community Development, Police, Fire, City Councilmembers, and representatives from the Beverly Hills Ambassadors Program.
The BOMA/GLA South Bay/Playa Vista Regional Council hosted a successful El Segundo Government Connect at PCT in El Segundo today. Thanks to our lunch sponsor, Duggan and Associates, and our host, PCT and CBRE. BOMA/GLA members had the chance to interact face to face with 8 El Segundo City officials who represented the full spectrum of city departments that property managers work with.
CITY OF L.A. WASTE HAULING PROGRAM UPDATE
BOMA/GLA members and staff had a great meeting with Councilman Bob Blumenfield today to talk about sidewalk vending regulations. As sidewalk vending moves through the Public Works Committee, chaired by Councilman Blumenfield, BOMA/GLA looks to stay engaged with the issue.
BOMA/GLA board members and BOMA/GLA PAC board members were excited to meet with former Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa today at their second leadership lunch with a 2018 gubernatorial candidate. The meeting was hosted by BOMA/GLA members Hines and OUE at the Owner's Conference Room at US Bank Tower in Downtown Los Angeles. The lunch was catered by Homeboy Industries, a non-profit that helps formerly gang-involved men and women redirect their lives.
The BOMA/GLA Westside Regional Council was excited to have Jack Sripoona, Field Deputy for Councilman Paul Koretz, speak at the Westside Regional Council Meeting this afternoon. Jack was on hand to talk about a number of issues including homelessness and police patrol throughout the district and the westside.
The BOMA/GLA Downtown Regional Council had their Q4 meeting today and was excited to have representation from Councilman Huizar's office participate and give us an update on whats going on in the District and at City Hall.
BOMA/GLA members had an exciting and informative session with Pasadena Fire Marshal Bryan Frieders this morning in Pasadena. Fire Marshal Frieders brought in his entire staff for the hour and a half session with BOMA/GLA Pasadena members.
