The devastation left by hurricanes Harvey and Irma should be a wakeup call to those of us in California.

These two natural disasters have burdened society with not only loss of lives, but an economic impact of more than $290 billion that includes property damage and loss; disruptions to business, transportation and infrastructure; heightened unemployment; and increased prices for gasoline and other fuels impacting all Americans.

Jeanne O’Donnell of the LA County Office of Emergency Management (in the center of the photo, above) was the featured speaker at BOMA/GLA’s Security and Emergency Preparedness Committee last week. Ms. O’Donnell highlighted emergency preparedness programs and information for businesses. While city personnel will be the first responders, the county is responsible for all social services for residents, including first aid and health care, shelter needs, clothing and food.
