LA CITY PLANNING PRESENTS ON DTLA 2040

LA City Planning attended the DTLA Regional Breakfast in June to discuss the future of Downtown LA. The presentation focused on the immense growth that is projected for downtown and how to accomodate for it while protecting neighborhood character and existing communities.

DOWNTOWN REGIONAL COUNCIL WELCOMES NEW DTLA DIRECTOR

Today the Downtown Regional Council welcomed Councilmember Huizar's new Downtown Director, Joella Hopkins, to the quarter 1 council meeting for an update on what's going on downtown. Joella updated the council on homelessness, waste hauling, and a few other items on the Councillman's agenda. Waste hauling in particular has been an issue city-wide, but if you own or manage a property downtown, reach out to BOMA/GLA advocacy staff for the right contacts in the city and with your individual hauler, NASA. 

DOWNTOWN REGIONAL COUNCIL HAS PRODUCTIVE Q4 MEETING

The BOMA/GLA Downtown Regional Council had their Q4 meeting today and was excited to have representation from Councilman Huizar's office participate and give us an update on whats going on in the District and at City Hall. 

BOMA/GLA STAFF AND MEMBERS LOBBY THE COUNCIL RE: SIDEWALK VENDING

BOMA/GLA members and staff had a great meeting with Councilman Bob Blumenfield today to talk about sidewalk vending regulations. As sidewalk vending moves through the Public Works Committee, chaired by Councilman Blumenfield, BOMA/GLA looks to stay engaged with the issue.

BOMA/GLA MEETS WITH CONGRESSMAN JIMMY GOMEZ

As part of the National Issues Conference - Local Edition, BOMA/GLA leadership met with US Congressman Jimmy Gomez, who represents downtown Los Angeles in Washington, DC.

Congressman Gomez was just recently elected in a special election to replace longtime Congressman Xavier Becerra when he was appointed Attorney General. Before becoming a US Congressman, Rep. Gomez served 2.5 terms in the California State Assembly.

COMPLIANCE DEADLINE DRAWING NEAR FOR CITY OF L.A. BENCHMARKING ORDINANCE

The City of L.A. has begun implementation of the Existing Building Energy and Water Efficiency (EBEWE) ordinance passed last year, and owners have already started receiving letters to comply if their building is over 100,000 sf. The compliance deadline is July 1, 2017.

SECURITY COMMITTEE LEADERS ADDRESS MAYOR GARCETTI’S OFFICE ON INCREASED PROTESTS DOWNTOWN

Security and Emergency Preparedness Committee Chair Marguerite Anastassiou, Commonwealth Management, and BOMA/GLA senior staff Martha Cox-Nitikman met with L.A. Deputy Mayor Jeff Gorrell and senior officials with LAPD to discuss the sharp increase in unpermitted protests in downtown L.A. Ms. Anastassiou expressed the concern that the blocking of driveways, streets and freeways by demonstrators without any notice could impact the desire for companies to locate downtown.

RIDE ANGELS FLIGHT BY LABOR DAY

The iconic Downtown Los Angeles attraction, Angels Flight, will reopen by Labor Day according to local officials. The announcement was made three years after an incident forced the operations to shut down. Mayor Eric Garcetti and Angels Flight Foundation President Hal Bastian.

MANAGERS CONCERNED ABOUT LACK OF FOOT PATROLS IN DOWNTOWN AREA

The BOMA/GLA Downtown Regional Council met and discussed their concerns about the growing crime rates in Downtown Los Angeles, especially in regards to aggressive pan handling. The increased perception of aggressive behavior and the documented increase in minor crimes across the city. At the same time, the Security & Emergency Preparedness Committ has approached LAPD about the issues buildings are facing with growing protests - in particular unpermitted gatherings. 

HCAC DEVELOPING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES DOWNTOWN

The BOMA/GLA Homeless and Community Awareness Committee will be developing a series of volunteer opportunities for Downtown Los Angeles property managers as well as in our other six regions.
