CALABASAS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

San Fernando Valley BOMA members heard from Maureen Tamuri, who oversees Calabasas Code Enforcement and Building and Safety, at the SFV Regional Breakfast to answer questions regarding permit times in Calabasas.

Calabasas members are seeing a 2 week turnaround time on permits but when LA County fire is involved that timeline can stretch out to 3-4 months. BOMA members committed to working with the City to make sure that permits check off the boxes that the City is looking for throughout the process.

L.A. DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING AND SAFETY EXECUTIVES RECOGNIZED BY CAL BUILDING OFFICIALS

BOMA/GLA congratulates L.A. Building and Safety General Manager Frank Bush for receiving the 2017-18 Building Official of the Year award from the California Building Officials (CALBO) organization. Frank has worked closely with BOMA/GLA over the years, including on crafting of the Seismic Retrofit ordinance. He deserves this prestigious award for promoting building safety in LA by working collaboratively with building owners, developers and the construction industry. 

BOMA/GLA WEIGHS IN ON SEISMIC SAFETY BILLS

Two bills have been introduced in the California state assembly, sponsored by structural engineer groups that propose to increase the minimum building code standards for construction. Traditionally the minimum standard in the code protect “life safety” – meaning building are meant to withstand an Earthquake without loss of life but may not necessary be able to be occupied immediately after an event.

LA BUILDING AND FIRE OFFICIALS DISCUSS CHANGES FOR 2018

The BOMA/GLA Codes and Regulations Committee was briefed recently by the LA Building Department’s Executive Officer, Osama Younan, regarding 2018 changes to the plan check and inspection process. The Department will roll out a new online plan check system next month, focused on plans of smaller projects not requiring plan review. The goal of the online submittals is to speed the processing of tenant improvement and other plans through the city.

PASADENA MEMBERS MEET WITH FIRE MARSHAL

BOMA/GLA members had an exciting and informative session with Pasadena Fire Marshal Bryan Frieders this morning in Pasadena. Fire Marshal Frieders brought in his entire staff for the hour and a half session with BOMA/GLA Pasadena members. 

City of L.A. May Extend Energy and Water Efficiency Ordinance Deadline

The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) has put forward a recommendation to the Los Angeles City Council to extend the initial benchmarking deadline to November 1, 2017, providing additional time for building owners to comply with the ordinance.

GLENDALE RANKED 3RD SAFEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY

The City of Glendale was recognized this year as the 3rd safest city in America. Glendale emphasizes citywide security preparations. The award was given based off a number of different crime rates per 100,000 people.
